A week in the life of a Marketing & Communications Assistant
About me
Hi there!
I am Deea, a communications specialist with 16 years of experience in communications, people management, and client relations. Throughout my career, I have demonstrated my ability to elevate brand awareness and engage diverse audiences through strategic storytelling and impactful messaging.
I specialize in using digital analytics tools to measure the impact of communication strategies and make data-informed decisions.
My experience has also equipped me with the ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to rapidly changing environments, skills that are critical in the fast-paced world of university communications. I have a proven track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously, meeting tight deadlines, and delivering high-quality work. Additionally, my ability to collaborate across departments and with external partners will allow me to support an organization's strategic communication goals and foster strong relationships.
I am passionate about the power of effective communication to build community, inspire action, and drive change. In the future, I want to create well-designed communication that enhances the user experience, whether it is social media communication, marketing and promotional content, video, print or an integration of on- and off-line communication.

I developed three essential skills as a Marketing and Communications Assistant at York University: project management, collaboration, and flexibility
My role relied heavily on exceptional project management.
The editorial process at the YUBlog involved researching seasonal content, pitching stories, drafting and editing, and web publishing. This process was highly collaborative. Other than my editors, I usually also worked with subject matter experts like student services, academic departments, and students I interviewed, to edit the content.
Due to the strike at York, the blog’s content calendar for March and April 2024 was on hold. I pivoted our content strategy to include evergreen content, useful for students during this stressful time. Situations like these happen in any organization and can bring the editorial team into a grinding halt. The key here was flexibility.
Therefore, I proposed to rework some older posts that were still relevant but needed updates. This strategy alleviated our content generation issues and enabled the team to recycle existing content, considerably reducing the publishing turnaround time.
